DJ Hurtzee
Moving on to our DJ of the month for March - DJ Hurtzee. He's really made an impact on DnB Noize so we felt it was time to tell you all about him. Hurtzee began his journey back in 1999 when he was around 14 years old. He hadn't even heard of Drum 'n' Bass until he went to a party at a friends', where somebody slammed a jungle massive tape from one of the old packs in to the stereo. Once "Helicopter" dropped he couldn't believe what he was hearing. He had never heard anything that sounded so good. He asked his friend what type of music it was, and he was told - Drum 'n' Bass/Jungle! From that point on he was totally hooked.
He started to become influenced by every DJ that played Drum 'n' Bass; Andy C, Nicky Blackmarket, DJ SS, Twisted Individual, DJ Hype, Friction, Subfocus, Clipz and Die to name but a few. He was also loving MC's like Skibba and Shabba and the SDC. Once upon a time Hurtzee even dabbled with a bit of MCing and began hosting parties with friends, always making sure to record himself to tape, so he could listen to it later.
Hurtzee .. "I still have them - how funny I sounded"
A few years on he met someone with a pair of decks who mixed Garage, and Hurtzee immediately became intrigued by the whole thing.
Hurtzee .. "Just watching him mix amazed me and when I left his house all I was left feeling and thinking was - right I'm gonna get myself a pair of decks!"
Perfecting and fine tuning his DJ'ing techniques, it was now people like DJ Hazard, Dangerous D, Jaydan and so on... that started to get him hooked on the 'Jump Up' side of Drum 'n' Bass. He started buying mainly Jump Up from Chemical Records and Badlands (The 2 main record shops nearest to him as he lived in Gloucester for 5 years).
Hurtzee is now living in Birmingham, which he believes is the best place for Jump Up at the moment. Artists such as Pleasure were just starting to make some huge waves and he could clearly see the direction he wanted to go in. He began taking notice of the more underground DJ's like Alpha, Majistrate, Kut D, CKB and many more.
He tells us "Jump Up these days is all about the freshest tunes and up and coming names, people like DJ Rowney, Levela, and Nutek (big ups for sorting me out), as well as the usual dirty Jump Up players like P.A, Drum Addict, Callide, Dirty Deeds... Too many to mention."
Hurtzee is now learning to produce and will hopefully have his own tunes rolling soon so watch this space!
The future is bright for Hurtzee and at DNB Noize he is going to go down a stormer.
