Shenseea - Shy Guy

Shenseea – Shy Guy (Diana King Cover) | Dancehall / Reggae

Shenseea takes on a true 90s Dancehall classic with her live cover of Diana King’s “Shy Guy”, bringing a fresh voice to a song that still carries plenty of nostalgia across Caribbean music and beyond.

The performance was recorded for Spotify’s new Carnival Sounds series at UNDR in Ladbroke Grove, London, with Shenseea backed by live keys, guitar, bass, drums and backing vocals. Released alongside her live version of “BRUCKSWEAT”, the performance puts a live-band spin on one of Diana King’s best-known songs.

“Shy Guy” is an interesting choice for Shenseea because Diana King’s original helped bring a softer, melodic side of Dancehall to a much wider international audience. Shenseea keeps the familiar spirit of the song while giving it her own contemporary Jamaican energy.

There’s also something fitting about hearing this version in a London setting. With Caribbean carnival culture deeply connected to the UK, the combination of Shenseea, a Jamaican Dancehall classic and a live performance in Ladbroke Grove feels like a natural meeting point between the old school and today.

For anyone who grew up with Diana King’s original, it’s a great dose of nostalgia. For a newer generation, it’s a chance to hear one of Dancehall’s crossover favourites through Shenseea’s style.
